This story is a composite, built from the pattern the FTC has repeatedly warned about: "task" or "optimisation" jobs offered over WhatsApp or Telegram.
It starts with an unexpected message from a friendly "recruiter". The work sounds easy: rate apps or products online, get paid per task. No interview, no CV. Within a day there's a dashboard showing earnings — and a small payout actually arrives.
Where it turns
Then a "combo task" appears that puts the account into a negative balance. To unlock your earnings, you're told to top up — usually in cryptocurrency. Each deposit unlocks a bigger task and a bigger shortfall. The money never comes back.
The red flags, in hindsight
- An unsolicited job offer by text or messaging app
- No interview, no contract, no named company address
- Pay that is tied to completing sets of online tasks
- Any request to deposit money — especially crypto — to get paid
A real employer never asks you to pay to receive your wages. If you've already paid, stop sending money and report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov (US) or your country's fraud line.
