Another composite, based on one of the most commonly reported job scams. A remote admin role is advertised with generous pay. The "interview" happens entirely over chat, and the offer arrives the same day.
Next comes a cheque to buy a laptop and software — but only from the company's "approved vendor", paid by gift card, transfer or Zelle. The cheque clears at first, so it feels safe.
Why it hurts
Days or weeks later the bank discovers the cheque is fake and reverses it. The money you sent to the "vendor" is gone, and you owe the bank the full amount.
How to protect yourself
- Never deposit a cheque from an employer and send part of it on
- Real employers ship equipment or reimburse through payroll
- Chat-only interviews with instant offers are a warning sign
- "Funds available" at your bank does not mean the cheque is real
